The first weekend I was in NYC was the humongous gay pride parade commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, which brought activists out of the closet when being gay was a crime.

Police presence all along the way pointedly tried to ensure safety in contrast to the raid and brutality at Stonewall.

People watched from every conceivable viewpoint along the way.

One of an estimated 2.5 million spectators watching 150,000 marchers in a parade that lasted a good 10 hours, I spent three hours at a frontline position behind a street barricade with a lesbian and three gay guys, having a great time. I just couldn’t last the whole 10 and a half hours.
